They're basically the Pokemon TCG's version of a bragging right. Got a silver card? You've got something pretty cool. They're rare, look awesome, and can sometimes be worth a lot of money. It's like finding a rare gem in your card collection.
Not worth the hype IMO. Just shinier versions of regular cards. If you're into collecting, sure, they're cool. But for gameplay, they're the same as any other card.
