Mostly, you need crystals for the Crystal Battleaxe, but you can also build cool Crystal Walls. It's like Viking bling for your base!

I've built some pretty awesome Crystal Walls in my Valheim base. The light passing through them adds a really nice touch! And of course, that Crystal Battleaxe is a beast in combat.
