Grandpa's Shrine is basically your report card in Stardew Valley. After two years in the game (start of year 3), Grandpa comes back to evaluate your progress. Based on how well you've done, you can earn up to 4 candles lit on the shrine, which indicates your performance. Each candle represents achievements like how much money you've made, if you've married, etc. If you get all 4 candles lit, you get a statue that gives you free Iridium every day!
From personal experience, Grandpa's Shrine is a great motivator! Getting all 4 candles lit was my goal, and it pushed me to try aspects of the game I might have ignored otherwise. Plus, the Iridium Statue you get for maxing out those candles is super handy for crafting and making high-level items.
