In my experience, unregistered ships make you a target for law enforcement every time you enter controlled space. It's like flying around with a 'Kick Me' sign.

If you don't register a ship in Starfield, you won't be able to legally sell it or use it freely in settled systems. Plus, the space cops might get a bit grumpy with you!

You won't be able to sell the ship until it's registered, so it just sits in your inventory, being all useless and stuff.
