GTA San Andreas is technically GTA number 5. It was released after GTA Vice City, making it the fifth installment in the series if you count the original GTA, GTA 2, GTA 3, and Vice City. But it's often just referred to as GTA San Andreas without the number.
San Andreas is the 7th game in the franchise if you're counting EVERYTHING, including expansions and the London 1969 title. But most just say it's the third major 3D game, right after Vice City.
