Honestly, the best way is to balance between Melee and Defense for general leveling up, then specialize once you get a feel for what you enjoy most!

If you're going for a swordsman build, focus on Melee, Defense, and Sword. If fruit powers are more your style, pour points into Fruit, Defense, and Melee.
