Nah, just turn down everything. It's like a whole new game when it's not a slideshow.
If your game's running slower than a sloth, try turning down shadows and unit size first. Trust me, it works wonders!
I reduced the campaign map graphics and it made my turns much faster and smoother. Give that a shot too!
