Hot Wheels hasn't completely stopped making cars with metal bottoms, but they've definitely become less common over the years. Back in the early days, metal bases were pretty standard, but by the 1980s and 1990s, you started seeing more with plastic bases to cut costs and for safety reasons. However, you can still find some special editions and collector series with metal bases even today.

They never really stopped, but it's rare now. Most of the ones you'll find in stores have plastic bottoms. If you're a collector looking for that metal base goodness, check out the adult collector lines or some of the anniversary editions.

Honestly, if you're asking for when the regular line completely ditched metal bases, it's like asking if they still make cars with character - it varies. There's no clear cut-off date because it depends on the series and model. Some recent ones still boast that cool, classic metal.
