Oh, the elusive hardwood! You can find it by chopping down the large stumps and logs on your farm once you've upgraded your axe. Also, don't forget to check the Secret Woods daily. You can enter north of the Wizard's tower; that place is a hardwood goldmine, dropping about 12 pieces daily!
