In my experience, just smash some rocks in the underground layers. Iron is pretty common, so you won't miss it. Looks like brownish nodes embedded in stone. Easy peasy.

Iron in Terraria can mainly be found underground. Start digging down from the surface and keep an eye out for stone areas with brown speckled blocks. That's your iron ore! It's more common the deeper you go, but watch out for the tougher enemies down there. Also, check around cave systems, as iron ore can be found in larger quantities there. Good luck mining!

Honestly, just buy it. You can sometimes find the Merchant NPC who'll sell you an Iron Anvil, and then you can use that to craft stuff. Who has time to dig?

Exploring the surface for cave entrances can lead to finding iron ore near the surface. Sometimes you don't have to dig too deep. Just follow natural caves, and you're bound to run into some iron ore veins.
