I've played as both, and I'd say warriors are more forgiving for beginners. Mages, though, steal the show with their powerful spells once you get the hang of it.
Warrior is better. Period. High defense and close-quarters combat make warriors the ultimate dungeon cleaners.
Both classes have their perks! Mages are great for dealing massive area damage, while warriors excel in close combat and tanking. It really depends on your playstyle. Try both and see which one you enjoy more!
