The sky lanterns in Terraria appear after you defeat a boss for the first time or during specific events as a celebration! It's the game's way of giving you a virtual pat on the back. They float up and make the night sky look pretty cool if you ask me.

Actually, the lanterns are a bug. JK! They're totally meant to be there; it's Terraria's version of fireworks for your victories.
