It's tough out there in the virtual music industry! Make sure you start singing lessons early and build up your skill bar. Then, audition for a career as a singer through the Special Careers menu!
Make sure your character has high looks and high talent in music! Keep practicing those vocal lessons and join a band to increase your chances.
From my experience, you need to continuously practice and master singing skills from an early age. Also, check the 'Special Careers' for Musician and audition when your skills are high.
