Fortnite removed merging due to an increase in account theft and fraud. People were exploiting the system, so Epic Games had to pull the plug to protect players.

Because people couldn't behave. Seriously, a little responsibility goes a long way. Epic had to stop folks from exploiting the system.

Epic Games felt the merging feature was being abused and resulted in security issues. It just became too risky to keep it around.
