They look so ugly because it makes the horror of their attacks more impactful. Seeing a grotesque Titan chomping down on someone definitely sticks in your mind.
My hot take: their ugliness makes the show more memorable. If they looked like supermodels, we'd just have another run-of-the-mill fantasy anime.
According to interviews with the creator, Hajime Isayama, the Titans’ unsettling designs are meant to reflect the uncanny valley effect – human-like but disturbingly off. I think he nailed it!
