Hands down, the rarest Pokemon card out there is the Pikachu Illustrator card. They only made about 39 of these bad boys for a contest in Japan back in '98. If you find one, you've basically hit the jackpot.

Pikachu Illustrator, no contest. Only 39 exist and they were never for sale, just prizes. So, good luck finding one!

Gotta say, everyone talks about the Pikachu Illustrator, but don't sleep on the Charizard 1st Edition. Not the rarest, but it's like the holy grail for collectors and can fetch a pretty penny.
