Unfortunately, PS3 and PS4 users can't play Minecraft together. The PS4 version supports cross-play with other Bedrock Edition platforms, but the PS3 version doesn't.

Nope, you can't play Minecraft together if one of you is on PS3 and the other on PS4. Time to upgrade!

I tried it myself, and it doesn't work. PS3 and PS4 versions of Minecraft are not compatible for crossplay.
