You can't actually plant turnips in Animal Crossing like you do with other crops. Instead, turnips are part of the 'Stalk Market' where you buy low and sell high. Every Sunday, Daisy Mae comes to town selling them. You gotta buy them and then sell them at Nook's Cranny during the week when the prices are higher. It's all about that buy low, sell high life!
Tried burying them once hoping for a turnip tree. Spoiler: doesn't work. Just buy and sell!
