You can't add friends by username directly. Use a Trainer Code instead. Simply go to your Friends tab, select 'Add Friend,' and punch in the code.
Trust me, I've tried! You'll need their Trainer Code to add them, which you can input in the Friends tab under 'Add Friend.'
