First, connect your PS4 controller to the PS3 via a USB cable. Then, go to 'Accessory Settings' > 'Manage Bluetooth Devices' > 'Register New Device' on your PS3. Hold the PS and Share buttons on the PS4 controller until it starts blinking, select it on the PS3, and you're good to go!

I managed to connect my PS4 controller to my PS3 without a PS3 controller by using a USB cable. Just plug it in, and it should work out of the box for most games!
