To do a hard reset on your PS3, hold down the power button for about 10 seconds until you hear three beeps. This resets the system settings to default but keeps your data intact.

I've done this a few times myself! Just turn off the PS3, then press and hold the power button again until you hear three beeps. It worked like a charm every time!
