How to Format an SD Card for Your Steam Deck in Desktop Mode
Formatting an SD card for your Steam Deck in Desktop Mode is pretty straightforward! Just boot into Desktop Mode, then plug your SD card into the Deck. Open up the 'Disks' application from the applications menu. Select your SD card from the list on the left, hit the gear icon for settings, and choose 'Format Partition'. Make sure to select a compatible file system, like FAT32 or exFAT, for best performance with Steam Deck. Give it a label if you want, then click 'Format'... and voila! You’re ready to expand your game library.

Just use the Disks app in Desktop Mode to format the SD. FAT32 or exFAT is the way to go.
Honestly, I just let Steam handle my game installs. Never bothered formatting an SD card. The internal storage is enough for me.
