Just keep hitting trees with the flimsy or stone axe and eventually you'll unlock the real axe recipe. No biggie.
Getting a real axe in Animal Crossing is pretty straightforward! You'll first need to buy a Flimsy Axe from Timmy in Tom Nook's tent (or his shop if you've progressed that far). Once you've got that, you'll need to upgrade it to a Stone Axe by gathering three wood and one iron nugget. Keep using your Stone Axe without breaking it to eventually get the option to buy a real axe from the shop. The real axe lasts longer and can chop down trees in three hits!
