I've done this a bunch; just head to Steam's Big Picture Mode, navigate to Settings > Controller Settings, and enable 'PlayStation Configuration Support'. You'll see the buttons change instantly.
Forget the generic settings; just turn on 'PlayStation Configuration Support' in Steam. Job done!
