Honestly, the best way is to keep the app open. Background stuff is buggy.

For me, turning off the battery saver mode and enabling background data did the trick. Never missed a raid invite since!

Make sure battery optimization for Pokemon GO is turned off! Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Optimization and find Pokemon GO. Turn it off so your Pokemon will keep showing up!
