I had to press the sync button on both the dongle and the guitar controller a few times before it worked. Patience is key!

First, plug the USB receiver into your PS3. Turn on the console and press the 'Home' button on the guitar controller. If it doesn't connect, press the sync button on the receiver and the controller at the same time until they pair.
