I remember the first time I tried to pick up a shell on the beach in Animal Crossing. I must've pressed every button but 'Y'. Finally, my little sister grabbed the controller, hit 'Y', and voila, I had a shell. So yeah, 'Y' button is your friend for picking stuff up!
