For real gaming, try a PS Vita as a secondary controller. Some games support Remote Play, letting you use the PS Vita as your controller. Give it a shot!

You can use a USB keyboard and mouse! Just plug them into the PS3, and navigate using arrow keys and Enter. It's like turning your PS3 into a giant computer.
