You might need to set up the F8 key for media controls in your System Preferences under Keyboard. Make sure 'Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys' is unchecked.
If F8 isn't working, try closing other media apps. Sometimes they interfere with the key's functionality with Spotify.
Honestly, I've never had trouble. Just hit F8, and if it doesn鈥檛 work, make sure Spotify is the selected app.
