You can actually switch to using the Wii U Gamepad by pressing the [-] button on the Gamepad itself and selecting the “Start Game on Gamepad” option.
Make sure your Wii U GamePad is charged and synced with your console. Use the GamePad's touchscreen to access the Skell menu and fast travel quickly!
Make sure your Gamepad is charged up, then simply hold it close to your heart and whisper, 'Let's get Monado this!' Or just use the Wii U Gamepad screen to play directly!
Just connect your Wii U GamePad and navigate the game menu like usual. For most actions, simply follow the on-screen prompts!
