Open the Pokemon GO app, tap on the Main Menu (the Pokeball icon), go to 'Friends' tab, and then click 'Add Friend'. You'll see 'Referral Code' at the bottom. Enter your code there and you're good to go!

I redeemed a referral code by going to Friends section in the app and entering the code under 'Referral Code' option. Got some cool rewards!
