For me, holding down the power button until the console shut off always worked. Sometimes, it even fixed persistent freezing issues.

Unplug the power cable from the back of the PS3, wait a few seconds, then plug it back in and restart. It鈥檚 the old 'turn it off and on again' trick!

Hold down the power button on the console until it beeps twice. This usually takes about 10 seconds and should force a reset.
