If you want your Sim to move on to the afterlife, stop giving them cakes! Without cakes, they'll age naturally and eventually pass away.

Old age is the way to go. Let your Sim grow old without using any life-extending items like birthday cakes, and they'll peacefully pass into the afterlife.
