Just let it sit idle for about 10 minutes and it will turn off automatically. Patience is a virtue!

You can also go to: Settings > Devices > Turn Off Device, and select your controller from the list.

Trust me, holding the PS button for a few seconds and selecting 'Turn Off Device' from the quick menu works perfectly.
