Easy peasy! First, get a USB drive with at least 200MB of free space. On your PC, create a folder named 'PS3' and inside that, create another named 'UPDATE.' Download the update file from the official PlayStation website into the 'UPDATE' folder. Then, plug the USB into your PS3, go to Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media, and let the magic happen!
Why even bother with USB? Just connect your PS3 to the internet and update directly. Way simpler!
I've done this a bunch of times. Make sure your USB is formatted to FAT32, and place the downloaded update file into 'PS3/UPDATE' folder structure. Plug it into your PS3, navigate to System Update, and select Update via Storage Media. Smooth sailing!
