Can confirm from personal experience: you need PS Plus to access any online multiplayer features in Modern Warfare. Totally worth it for the epic battles though!

Yes, you need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, but you can still play the campaign and Spec Ops missions without it! Solo mode for the win!
