From my experience, it's a bit hit or miss with popular names, so get creative with your spelling if you really have your heart set on something.
You can also check PSN name availability via the PlayStation website. Just log in, go to your account settings, and try to change your Online ID. Easy peasy!
Honestly, you're better off just thinking of something more unique. Common names are always taken!
