Metal Coat is used to evolve certain Pokémon! You need it to evolve Onix into Steelix and Scyther into Scizor. Super handy for those steel-type collections!

From personal experience, I got my Steelix with a Metal Coat after what felt like forever trying to get that item. Worth it though!
