From experience, I've found the PS3 plays MP4 videos the smoothest, but it will also handle AVI and DivX formats. It struggles with MKV files though.

I’ve had luck with MP4, AVI, and DivX files on my PS3. Just be careful with the codecs.

Honestly, if it’s not MP4 or AVI, you're kinda rolling the dice. You might need to convert some of your files.
