Honestly, I've never needed to use my friend code. Just search for your friends by their username. Much easier.
You can find your Steam friend code super easily! Just open your Steam client, click on your username in the upper right corner, then select 'Friends' from the drop-down menu. There should be a button that says 'Add a Friend' where you'll see your unique friend code. Share that with your buddies and you're all set to game together!
