Aliens attacked Earth to secure a strategic advantage over their enemies. Earth just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

As someone who's played through it, I can tell you the aliens were fighting each other, and Earth got caught in the crossfire. We were just unlucky collateral damage.
