You need PlayStation Plus to play WW2 online because it allows you to access multiplayer features. Without it, you're stuck playing the campaign and offline modes.

It’s all about online multiplayer! PS Plus is required for most online gameplay on PS4 and PS5, including COD: WW2.

First-hand experience here: I tried playing WW2 without PS Plus, and I couldn't join any multiplayer lobbies. Got PS Plus, and it worked like a charm!
