Had a handmade rifle as my go-to for a long stretch in my last playthrough. Tried to tweak it for Gunslinger perks hoping for a hidden gem. Long story short: big sad. It doesn't work. Stick to Rifleman for the damage boost. Trust me, it's the way to go.

Nope, the handmade rifle in Fallout 4 doesn't play nice with the Gunslinger perks. Those perks are all about buffing non-automatic pistols, and the handmade rifle is firmly in the Rifle category, so it's more in the territory of Rifleman or Commando perks depending on how you've got it modded.

Hot take: Why even bother with Gunslinger for a handmade rifle? Just soup it up with Rifleman or Commando and watch things go boom!

Gunslinger with a handmade rifle? As much as I wish it were a quirky build secret, it's a no-go. The game's mechanics strictly categorize it as a rifle, so your best bet is maxing out those Rifleman perks for a nice damage boost.
