How do I assign someone to artillery in Fallout 4?

I had a tough time figuring this out too until I realized settlers are kinda like universal remote controls; they'll do anything! So, just pick a settler, any settler, tap that command button, and point them toward the artillery. They’ll get the hint. Worked for me every time. It’s like magic, but with more explosions.

Everyone's making this sound so easy, but don't forget you actually need the artillery first! No artillery, no fun. Build it, then any settler will do. They're literally waiting around to be told what to do.

First things first, buddy! You gotta make sure you've completed the quest 'Old Guns' to unlock artillery pieces. After that, just wander into your settlement, build an artillery piece in workshop mode, and then find a settler you fancy for cannon duties. Walk up to them and enter the command mode by pressing the prompt (it's usually the 'E' key on PC, 'X' on PS4, and 'A' on Xbox One). Point your cursor at the artillery, and voilà, your settler is now your very own artillery operator, ready to rain destruction at your command.
