I actually tried to save the antidote for myself because I thought I could handle the quest without getting bitten. Spoiler: I got bitten. Ended up using the cure on myself and felt guilty for days. Moral of the story? Be prepared to make some tough decisions in Fallout 4.
In my experience, the best way to avoid this whole dilemma is to be super careful not to get bitten by those diseased mole rats in the first place. Wear power armor or use a companion as a shield. If you do get the disease, though, that antidote in Vault 81 is your only hope. No other cures or tricks, unfortunately.
