Honestly, I kinda just keep Dogmeat around most of the time. Everyone else gets the 'it's not you, it's me' talk eventually.
Don't forget, when you're dismissing a companion, you also get the chance to handpick their new home base. Adds a nice touch of strategy to who stays where!
Just tell them to go away. Literally, talk to them, select the 'Dismiss' option, and send them to your favorite settlement. Easy peasy.
