Don't ignore your settlers' thirst! Plop down some water pumps in the dirt of your settlements. It's the beginner's go-to. Later, you'll want to upgrade to water purifiers in larger bodies of water for a bigger water supply. Just remember, water purifiers need power, so make sure you've got your generators ready. A happy settlement is a hydrated settlement.
Honestly, just spam those water pumps early on. The settlers can wait for the fancy gadgets until you're swimming in resources.
