Can you cast an instant without chaining to anything in MTG?
Absolutely! In MTG, instants are the ninjas of the card types - always ready to surprise. You can cast an instant whenever you have priority, and it doesn't need to be in response to anything. Got mana and an instant card in your hand? Go for it, whether it's during your turn or your opponent's.

Actually, I think the beauty of instants is exactly in chaining them. Sure, you CAN cast them alone, but where鈥檚 the fun in not waiting for the perfect moment to turn the tables?
Been there, cast that. I threw down a Lightning Bolt on my opponent鈥檚 end step, not chaining it to anything. Just to flex that I could. It鈥檚 all about sending a message.
Short answer: Yep! You can cast instants whenever. No need to wait for an invitation.
